The purpose of the expedition was to determine:
i. The approach the Immortals used to access the Anopaia path. There are four possible candidates:
(a) The Damasta Spur approach (b) The Chalkomata Spring approach (c) The Asopus Gorge (d) The Varthates approach
ii. To search for the possible location of the Phokian defense position
iii. To determine the path taken to Thermopylae following the skirmish with the Phokians
iv. To establish reasonably precise time frames for each segment of the route,
v. To determine the total length of the march from the Persian camp to the Middle Gate at Thermopylae
vi. To film the entire route (with commentary)
vii. To provide precise coordinates, distances and elevations for the location of significant landmarks using global positioning
LEONIDAS 2000 EXPEDITION REPORT
The final report of the 2000 expedition may be accessed by clicking on the link below. A scientific version of our report is now in preparation. We also have a video of the expedition (including our hike up the Asopus Gorge) which we shall make available on the internet for a small fee. This two hour video is the only one in existence which documents on eof the possible routes the Immortals took in 480 BC.
